I used to use Neovim a lot more, but these days I mostly use Plan9 Acme(1) or OpenBSD vi(1).
I love vim because you can easily edit text with the keyboard thanks to a language of composable commands. Vim is a pretty old project though and understandably it's accumulated a bit of cruft. Neovim is an attempt to clean up the code, make it easier to interoperate with, implement new features and provide better defaults.
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/nvim/instead of ~ and is called init.vim
As far as I know, most of these plugins work with vim as well.
